Jaw Pain & TMD
The jaws are a complex body part composed of several bones, a complex synovial joint (TMJ), muscles, ligaments and nerves. These work together to allow movements and function. Any aspect of the jaw can become inflamed, damaged or degenerative and lead to pain – termed ‘Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)”.
Causes of Jaw Pain & TMD
Myofascial in nature
- Muscular pain which can be associated with clenching, grinding or postural impacts
Related to joint
- Degenerative diseases including arthritis may involve the TMJ, resulting in damage of the cartilage or bone of the joint.
- The cartilage disc between the joint may be a source of clicking and locking if it becomes displaced out of its ordinary position during movement
What can be done
Treatment for jaw pain varies depending on the source of pain and managing factors that contribute to the problem. Treatment is often multidisciplinary and can include:
- A dental night guard
- Physiotherapy
- Myotherapy
- Surgery
- Medications
- Stress reduction
